The company says early December is when it will begin delivering the Hummer EV e-bike to customers.

To complement its Hummer EV truck, which is decked out with dual-motor, fat-tire e-bikes, GMC teamed up with the world’s leading supplier of electric bikes for police to produce an over-the-top, dual-motor, fat-tire e-bike. This Hummer and e-bike combination is a sign that automakers are trying to capitalise on the growing popularity of e-bikes to promote electric vehicles.

GMC’s new EV all-wheel drive e-bike (as described in its press release) has two 750W hub motors that generate 2,400W of power, a 48-volt / 17-amp-hour LG battery (which may be upgraded to a 21Ah version), and will be available for purchase online at gmcebike.com or at GMC dealers for £3,999. (Although it is a little pricey for an e-bike, its cheaper than the Hummer EV Edition 1 at £112,595.)

GMC isn’t constructing the electric bikes themselves as it did in the early 2000s. It will be licensing the Hummer brand to ‘Recon’, a significant supplier of hefty, fat-wheeled e-bikes to police departments and federal agencies. But, according to WANE 15, the company was boasting a “collaboration with a prominent automobile manufacturer” just last month to enter the e-bike market. It sounds like they made good on their promise!

“Recon is pleased to collaborate with GMC on this unique world-class AWD ebike that parallels the unrivalled reputation of HUMMER EVs as the leader in EV off-road adventure,” said Jeff Fuze, president of Recon.

This Class 3 e-bike is powered by Bafang motors, which provide up to 80Nm of torque (or 160Nm, if you count them individually). The bike can attain speeds of up to 28mph thanks to this impressive combination. However, the four-piston hydraulic brakes will bring the bike to a gentle halt to keep things safe.

The bike features three driving modes: Cruise (rear-wheel drive), Traction (front-wheel drive) Adrenaline (all-wheel drive) Shimano provides the gearing, and the bike’s front suspension is adjustable.

Automakers are finding various ways to integrate e-bikes into their outdoor adventure vehicles. For example, Rivian’s CEO recently revealed that the company is working on its models, which will likely fit in nicely with its specific brand of outdoor adventure vehicles.

Car companies usually release their own electric bikes as a brand licensing agreement. For example, the Jeep e-bike or the Hummer folding bike with their logos. Alternatively, a much-hyped project may be subject to corporate cost-cutting like General Motors’ Ariv e-bikes.

The Hummer EV will begin delivering e-bikes to customers in early December.
