An electric bike hire scheme is set to launch in Aberdeen, where bikes can be rented on a pay-as-you-go basis.
Using bikes will make shorter trips easier and benefit vulnerable people. We see how bikes lead to increased public transit usage in other cities, and we hope for the same result in Aberdeen for a healthier environment.
The city will be crisscrossed with 100’s of electric bikes as part of a new hire scheme starting this week.
From November 9th onwards, the bikes will be available to use on a pay-as-you-go basis as part of the Big Issue eBikes and Aberdeen City Centre project.
Other cities such as Inverness and Dundee have already experienced e-bike hire success. Aberdeen will follow suit.
Around 40 spots will be supplied with eBikes, and the full rollout is scheduled for next year. Jan Tore Endresen, CEO of Big Issue eBikes, is pleased to announce that Aberdeen will be included.
“They are fun to use, will make shorter trips easier, and benefit vulnerable people. We see how bikes lead to increased travel by public transport in other cities and hope to have the same effect on travel patterns in Aberdeen for a better environment.”
“We hope the public will look after our bikes and take care of the offer so that we can travel more sustainably in the future”.”
The bike, which weighs just over 20 kilograms, has an adjustable seat, phone holder, a bell, and a 35-mile range. All of the tyres are puncture-resistant, and the pedal assist engages as the rider begins to pedal.
Those who sign up early for the Big Issue eBikes app can rent the bikes for free. However, after unlocking the bike for 60p, you will be charged 20p per minute after that.
Renting a bike for up to 12 hours costs £12, and renting for up to 20 minutes costs £4.40. You can pay £2.40 for a 10-minute ride or £4.40 for a 20-minute ride. For more information, please visit https://bigissue.bike/
